Earth Day 2026: Our Power, Our Planet

Earth Day, the global campaign which drives change to protect the planet, returns on 22nd April with “Our Power, Our Planet” returning as a key theme.

On this occasion, the theme will place a renewed focus on people and communities, emphasising how everyday actions can help shape environmental progress.

Earth Day 2026 seeks to showcase the influence individuals have by using their voices and actions to make a lasting impact. With factors such as the cost of living, infrastructure stability, public health and long-term stability being prevalent topical issues, Earth Day 2026 encourages us to step up to support the changes we want actioned.

The North East Scotland Pension Fund (NESPF) is passionate about using its voice and actions to promote environmental progress. The NESPF seeks to encourage high standards of corporate governance and social responsibility using its influence as a major shareholder primarily through voting power and engagement. As a member of Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF) and a signatory of the Principles of Responsible Investment (PRI), the Fund aims to use its voice to drive positive and meaningful change.

Through its actions, the NESPF actively seeks out opportunities, with the view of directly investing in assets that aid the energy transition to a lower carbon economy. One example of this is that the Fund has invested just under £1 million to install 3,000 photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of a distribution warehouse in Wolverhampton.

Since installation (which commenced in Feb 2023), the system has produced the details below:

  • The system has generated 2,329,625kWh since commissioning.
  • This is enough to boil a kettle 21,372,708 times.
  • This is equivalent to the yearly electricity use of 609 average UK households.
  • This would allow power for 1,271 electric cars for a year.
  • The electricity generated has offset the same Co2 as planting 5,081 trees.
  • The electricity generated has allowed 306.5 tonnes of Co2 eq. emissions to be saved.

Going forward, the NESPF will continue to demonstrate its commitment to responsible investments and use its influence to positively shape the future of the planet.
